COMPOUNDING PHARMACY

COMPOUNDING CUSTOMIZED MEDICATIONS
We have a state-of-the-art compounding lab for the preparation of customized medications. Using modern technology, innovative medication dosing devices, and new drug delivery systems, Smith Caldwell Drug Store creates a large number of alternative dosage forms, including:
• Medicated Lozenges • Topical & Oral Sprays
• Creams, Lotions & Gels • Hospice Formulations
• Ophthalmic Medications • Preservative-Free Formulas
• Sugar Free Preparations • Unavailable Preparations
• Modified Release Capsules • Lip Balms
• Nasal Sprays • Urethral Inserts
• Suppositories • Pediatric Dosages
• Geriatric Dosages
• Alternate Dosage Forms and much more!

Over the last 50 years manufacturers have
played a significant role in advancing health care.
Although mass-produced drugs meet the
needs of most patients, there are still a number
of patients who require a pharmacist to customize
or compound medications to meet their unique
medical needs.

There are many important reasons to use a
compounded medication instead of a standard
manufactured prescription. For example, if you
or a loved one is sick and unable to swallow medications, a cream or rub can be compounded to penetrate the skin for quick
absorption. If giving your pet/animal medications is a problem, we can compound their prescription medications with flavors such as beef, liver, chicken, or even make them into a rub or gel that doesn’t have to be swallowed.

Natural Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement

Bio-identical hormones have the same chemical structure as hormones that are made by the human body. The key to natural or bio-identical versus synthetic hormones is the molecular structure of the hormone. In order for the replacement hormone to fully replicate the function of hormones which were originally naturally produced and present in the human body, the chemical structure must exactly match the original.

Researchers have long held that there are significant differences between hormones that are natural to humans (bio-identical) and synthetic (including horse) preparations. Stuctural differences that exist between synthetic or animal and human hormones may be responsible for side effects that are experienced when non-bio-identical hormones are used for replacement therapy. It is the structure of the hormone, not the source, that is key. The term “bio-identical” does not indicate the source of the hormone, but rather indicates that the chemical structure of the replacement hormone is identical to that of the hormone naturally found in the human body.

Hormonal Balance and Your Health

• Fatigue • Stress • Anxiety
• Low sex drive • Mood swings • Foggy thinking
• Hot flashes • Sleep disturbances • Depression

Do any of these symptoms sound familiar? It could be your hormones! How can saliva hormone testing help you?

Saliva testing can help to identify hormone imbalances that may be causing the above symptoms. Saliva testing can:

identify hormonal imbalances that may be causing unwanted symptoms and chronic health problems,
monitor the effects of hormone replacement therapy, and
help to prevent disease and rapid aging.

In addition, saliva test results can help you and your health care provider determine the best course of treatment to restore hormonal balance.

Transdermal Medications
The skin is the body’s largest organ, and as such, provides an excellent route for administration and absorption of numerous medications. We traditionally think of giving most drugs via oral, rectal, or injectable routes. In the past, most medications that were administered topically as creams or ointments were for treatment of a local skin infection or condition such as eczema or hives. Now, novel bases allow compounding pharmacists to prepare transdermal formulations that are applied topically, but can be absorbed into subcutaneous tissues or the systemic circulation and used for:

treatment of localized problems such a knee or back pain, “TMJ” (temporomandibular joint) disorder, or “tennis elbow”; and
systemic therapy for conditions such as nausea and vomiting, or fibromyalgia; and
bio-identical hormone replacement therapy; and
medicating animals conveniently...and much more!

Flavored Medications
We know that when medication is taken as directed, people and their pets have a better chance of getting well and staying healthy. That’s why we flavor medicine, allowing each individual to choose his or her favorite flavor. Older people or those with chronic illness often prefer coffee or butter flavors. Children can choose from flavors such as:

• watermelon • chocolate • root beer • apple • grape • orange
• bubble gum • bananas • or a variety of other flavors.

We also offer your pet/animal flavors:
liver • bacon • cheese • tuna
