Is there a Connection between Diabetes and
Heart Disease?
An increase in the occurrence of coronary
artery disease (CAD) is linked to persons
with Diabetes, High Cholesterol, High Blood
Pressure and Obesity. The percentage of diabetic
patients that are obese is 80%. Obesity issues
can contribute to higher levels of cholesterol
for persons with diabetes.
Men, between the ages of 35 and 64, with diabetes
have an increase in the risk of congestive
heart failure by 4 times. Women in the same
age brackets have an increased risk by 8 times.

Cholesterol
Screenings
Cholesterol (Lipids)
High levels of lipids in your blood can cause heart
disease, heart attacks, and strokes. It is very
important that you keep your lipids at a healthy
level. Checking your lipid levels once a year will
help you and your doctor spot any problems.
High Density Cholesterol (HDL) is the “good”
cholesterol: it removes extra cholesterol from your
arteries.
Low Density Cholesterol (LDL) is the “bad”
cholesterol: it contributes to the buildup of fat
deposits in your arteries.
One finger stick and a five minute process is all
it takes!

will be required to fast the night before. |
A1C
(hemoglobin A1C)
A1C test checks your control over diabetes for a
2 to 3 month period. The A1C test looks at the amount
of glucose that has attached to blood cells. As
glucose levels rise, more and more glucose attaches
to the blood cells. The A1C test result is shown
as a percentage. The target range for A1C is 6.5%.
Routine self-monitoring of blood glucose is the
most successful approach to self-management of diabetes
because it provides an ongoing assessment of a person’s
blood glucose level.
Since most long-term complications of diabetes are
related to A1C levels, this test should be a regular
part of assessing your diabetes care. |
Glucose
Screening
Glucose (GLU) is the measure of the sugar level
in your blood. |

Bone
Density Testing
Osteoporosis is a silent progressive disease characterized
by decreased bone density and increased bone fragility.
In the US alone, 28 million persons are at risk
for developing osteoporosis. There are approximately
1.5 million fractures a year attributed to this
disease and women are at a greater risk. Eighteen million
women a year between the ages of 50-65 are asymptomatic
for osteoporosis. Many of these women are candidates
for prevention. Early detection and intervention
are crucial.
Have a seat and soak your feet and within 15 minutes
a computerized graph illustrating your bone density
reading will be ready for your review. The World
Health Organization (WHO) defines fracture risk,
based on T-scores for bone mineral density (BMD)
testing. The T-score is the difference between the
patient value and the average value in healthy young
adults (divided by standard deviation). The ultrasound
properties of the heel measured indicates the risk
of osteoporotic fracture. Your reading will assist
you in making any informed decision necessary.
